Physician entrepreneurs play an increasingly important role and in medical device development owing to their direct familiarity with the clinical realities, and the needs and culture of the target users. While some fulfill this role in parallel to their clinical career, others have embraced a career in industry and venture career with great success.
This session is moderated by a seasoned executive active in Boston’s MedTech innovation scene and brings together speakers from both career paths, with one serial physician entrepreneur providing a retrospective overview of lessons learned, and three surgeon founders of promising startups developing device-based solutions to support patients with respiratory failure, varicose veins, as well as spinal surgery.
In addition to his appointment as Alira Health CEO in 2014, Gabriele serves on the Board of Directors of MassMedic and for leading-edge start-ups EnlightenVue, WoundForce, Firefly, and Computational Life. In 2018, he co-founded the MetroWest Life Sciences Network to develop collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Boston’s MetroWest life sciences ecosystem. Gabriele is a regular participant in global events as a moderator, speaker, and panelist.
Steven P. Keller, MD, PhD recently joined Johns Hopkins University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Previously, Dr. Keller was a physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he served as the Medical Director of the ECMO program. He continues as affiliated faculty at the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center where he conducts research on mechanical circulatory support, organ-device interactions, and extracorporeal organ perfusion. Dr. Keller is a co-founder of X-COR Therapeutics, Inc.
Dr. Lishan Aklog is Chairman & CEO of PAVmed Inc. (Nasdaq: PAVM), a commercial-stage multi-product medical technology company. He also serves on the board of directors leading medical technology trade association, AdvaMed. He previously co-founded four medical device companies, including his life-saving invention AngioVac®. Dr. Aklog previously had a distinguished academic and clinical career as a technological innovator in cardiac surgery at Harvard Medical School and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University and completed his surgical residency training at a Harvard’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
Enric Roche is a vascular surgeon with more than 25 years of experience, the last 15 years specializing in venous pathology, and minimally invasive treatments. A restless innovator, he has always been driven to resolve annoying, variable, unsafe or difficult clinical scenarios of global impact. The focus of his presentation is a new system for preparation of foam for sclerotherapy of varicose veins, representing a clear step forward in terms of standardization and safety, while adding substantial convenience and versatile with respect to today’s manual methods.
John Dorman is a board-certified neurosurgeon, programmer, and founder of Circinus Medical Technologies, LLC, based in Boulder, Colorado. He utilized his programming skills to create a novel spinal navigation system, called Bolt, which runs on an off-the-shelf Apple mobile device. Circinus plans to submit the 510(k) for the Bolt Navigation system in the near future and hopes to be on the market in the U.S. later this year.
