She comes to CBSET from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she was Chief of Comparative Pathology, managing research and diagnostic pathology support for both in house and external research groups. THREE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DR. NICOLA PARRY
1: She is a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in the field of pathology.
Dr. Parry's first presentation in her new role as Director of Pathology Laboratory Operations for CBSET occurred at the ACVP Annual Meeting in October 2023. Her presentation, Lost in the Labyrinth: A Primer on Basic Cochlear Histology for Anatomic Pathologists, focused on the cochlea. "Despite the vital roles of the inner ear in hearing and balance, basic inner ear histology remains a mystery to even many experienced pathologists, for a variety of reasons," according to Dr. Parry. She highlighted some key microscopic features for pathologists to recognize as they begin to learn more about this tissue, intended to enable pathologists in all professional settings to more confidently approach histopathologic examination of the inner ear "and thus better interpret microscopic changes in this tissue."
2: She has broad pathology expertise.
Since joining CBSET, Dr. Parry has focused on evaluating tissue responses related to novel biomedical devices and drugs. "The responsibility of our pathology team is to work synergistically with sponsors, scientists, and internal experts to produce high-quality results that accurately and efficiently represent safety and performance of drugs and devices," she says. Toward that end, Dr. Parry emphasizes that CBSET provides a GLP compliant facility that is staffed by an experienced team of ACVP board-certified veterinary pathologists as well as experienced scientists, necropsy technicians, and HT certified histotechnicians, in addition to presenting at many scientific conferences. Dr. Parry has authored numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as several textbook chapters in the field of laboratory animal pathology.
3: She is a diplomate of ACVP.
The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) is the oldest veterinary specialty organization recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). ACVP is an international professional society with members worldwide and a nonprofit organization that sets the standard for veterinary pathology. In addition to being an ACVP Diplomate in anatomic pathology, Dr. Parry has been an active volunteer member of the organization since 2005, serving on numerous committees, including the Education Committee, Examination Committee, Appeals Committee, and Lifelong Learning Committee. She currently serves as a member of the ACVP Board of Directors. Dr. Parry has also been active in other organizations, including the AVMA, and recently served as the Chair of the AVMA's Council on Education Committee. In 2019 she was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for Meritorious Contributions to the Profession.
